Q: how do i get legal aid?

A: if you go to their website at legalaid.on.ca and look under the tab for legal help the information needed to apply will be found there. There are different requirements depending on your situation so its important to get the up to date information so that your application can proceed smoothly. As of April 1/19 legal aid is raising their financial eligibility threshold 6%. The new gross income for a single applicant without dependants is now going to be $17, 731. In cases of domestic abuse that ceiling is now going to be $22,720. For applicants that have 1 dependant the maximum allowed is now $31,917 for non domestic related cases and $32,131 for domestic cases. With two dependants the numbers are $37,194 and $39,352 for domestic cases. I am providing these numbers as they are the most current i have but you should call legal aid to verify your situation as there are several factors that can change things.

Q:will i be able to get some advise for free?

A: Yes. I am happy to discuss your case before requiring any fees. If you don’t qualify for legal aid, we may be able to set up a payment plan that can work for you.

q: where is your office located?

A: My office is at 1 golden ave, suite 3. This is near the major intersection of bloor st west and Dundas st west. ( the high park area) of Toronto. I am able to meet at any court house in the GTA as well, and this is sometimes the most convenient for the clients.

Q: what types of cases do you handle.

A: I deal with all types of criminal offences and highway driving offences. There is no case too small or too big and I have experience dealing with all types offences successfully.

Q: If i cant go to court due to emergency what do i do?

A: People charged with an offence must appear at court when required. The failure to do so can result in a further charge of failing to appear and the crown often seeks thirty days jail for these offences. However, even if you did forget, forgetfulness is a defence to the charge usually. If you are simply unavailable to attend on a particular day, then someone can go in your place as your agent. They will have to tell the court they are your agent and why you are not here. this is done fairly routinely. Counsel of course can attend for you at any time. Once you retain counsel, you can sign a form called a designation and this allows counsel to appear for you without question until the time of the trial or other disposition of the case.
